The Pains of Being Pure At Heart 'The Pains of Being Pure at Heart' (2009)

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart sound like a troupe of fresh-faced kids let loose in the library of twee. Which may, indeed, be what they are. The New Yorker quartet, clearly students of the school of guitar jangle, took twee-pop to the masses in 2009 as one of the year's biggest breakout bands. Their self-titled, debut album achieved crossover status by way of great tunes. For their fellow twee scholars, it's obvious “This Love is F**king Right!” is The Pains of Being Pure at Heart's homage to (read: obvious re-write of) the Field Mice's “This Love is Not Wrong.” But for anyone else, it —not to mention “Young Adult Friction,” and “A Teenager in Love” and...— is just a great pop-song.

Camera Obscura 'Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi' (2001)

Discovered by Belle and Sebastian's Stuart Murdoch, Glasgow's Camera Obscura were good enough to wear comparisons to their forebears well. Eight years before the string-swept, hi-fidelity pop grandeur of 2009's My Maudlin Career, the Scottish outfit delivered this tentative, slightly clumsy, intensely melancholy set of classic pop-songs in twee threads. Their debut heralded the arrival of a prime songwriting talent in the form of Traceyanne Campbell, who, across an array of startlingly melodic and perfectly-formed tunes, tossed off lyrical bons mots like “crestfallen boys are boring,” “I don't do crowds,” and “I'm softer than my face would suggest” with a charming kind of studied casualness.

Acid House Kings 'Advantage Acid House Kings' (1997)

The flourishing of the twee movement owed a particular debt to the cultural stronghold effete indie-pop had on a generation of sensitive, sentimental Swedish kids. Undoubtably the biggest twee devotee in Sweden is Johan Angergård, the frontman of Acid House Kings, Club 8, and the Legends, and the chap who runs Stockholm's ace Labrador Records imprint. Out of his various bands of varying tweeness, the ironically-named Acid House Kings are clearly the twee-est: openly, hopelessly devoted to the iconic jangle of The Smiths, albeit with more of the sweet meekness of the Field Mice.Advantage Acid House Kings, their debut album, laid down the sound that, over three subsequent CDs, AHK have certainly stayed true to.

Talulah Gosh 'Backwash' (1996)

Collecting every one of Talulah Gosh's 25 songs, Backwash is the LP-length retrospective of a band whose brilliant two-year career ('86-'88) didn't actually produce an album. Led by Amelia Fletcher (who'd later front Heavenly, Marine Research, and the Tender Trap), Talulah Gosh's seemingly-innocuous push-beat pop-songs and ultra-girly ba-ba-bas blithely wielded a feminist agenda, undermining masculine rock archetypes at every chance. Fletcher infamously caroled “some of my best friends are bastards like you” on the cuttingly-titled “I Can't Get No Satisfaction (Thank God),” a song which, when covered by The Softies in 1995, symbolized twee's spiritual migration across the Atlantic.

The Field Mice 'Snowball' (1989)

The Field Mice quickly became the darlings of the budding twee scene, issuing 45s for the soon-to-be-iconic Sarah Records imprint that were soaked in a sense of joyous melancholy. The anorak-clad South Londoners were fronted by a near-monotonal songwriter named Bobby Wratten, who could see the beauty in relationships falling apart, or, more noticeably, in his own failings. Wratten penned tunes titled “Sensitive” and “I Can See Myself Alone Forever,” and, in “Fabulous Friend,” infamously sang “I'm not brave/I'm not special/I'm not any of those things.” The debut Field Mice LP was so not-rock it almost seemed to be a provocation; a thought echoed by its unadorned, bright mauve sleeve.

Beat Happening 'Jamboree' (1988)

Whilst the twee movement began in the thriving UK indie scene, no one individual may've done more for its underground, anti-macho, strictly-DIY aesthetic than Calvin Johnson. In the unlikely outpost of Olympia, Washington, Johnson founded the legendary K Records, fronted the amazing Beat Happening, and, through his own charismatic enthusiasm, sought to create an 'International Pop Underground' of anti-corporate acts from the globe over. By the time Beat Happening released their second album, Jamboree, the ultra-amateurism of their early days had given way to a genuine performative command; Johnson's booming baritone and magnetic presence sparkling on classic cuts like “Indian Summer” and “Bewitched.”

I just don't think her career is as hot as she hopes it to be so Mr. JT man is enlisted to give her a little more umph.  However, this sounds like a castaway from Madonna's last album.  That's not a good thing.

21 Guns

"21 Guns" is a song by American rock band Green Day. It is the second single from their eighth studio album, 21st Century Breakdown. The single was released through Reprise Records on May 25, 2009 as a digital download and July 14, 2009 as a CD single.

"21 Guns" was released to modern rock radio stations on May 25, 2009, although it had already been played on some radio stations, such as KROQ in Los Angeles and 101.9 in New York City.[2] In the radio edit, the song is over forty seconds shorter than the album version because the guitar solo is shortened and the beginning is cut out. The CD single and clear 7" single were released on July 14, 2009.
The song is featured on the soundtrack to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which was released on June 23, 2009.[3] (It is featured four times in the film itself.) It became available for download on the music video game series Rock Band on July 7, 2009, along with the songs "East Jesus Nowhere" and "Know Your Enemy".[4]
At the pre-release preview of 21st Century Breakdown, a reviewer for MTV News called the song, "a cell-phones-in-the-air anthem".[5]
The song was also performed live on the 34th season of Saturday Night Live.

I Love Alternative-Rock Music Singers, but My Favorites Always Seem to Be British

wenty years ago, I was a radio disc jockey with radio shows that played alternative-rock music. I also had a weekly show that played only music by British alternative singers. Over the years, I developed my top five best British alternative-rock singers list, which I used to change
monthly depending on what new music was being released. Twenty years later, though, that list is now the same. I love alternative rock music but my list of favorite British alternative rock singers is what I consider the best there is.

5. Robyn Hitchcock - Robyn Hitchcock is also on my list of top alternative rock music bands because of his partnership with the Egyptians. But Hitchcock is primarily a solo man, with most of his 25-plus records released as solo albums. He writes songs that sound quite depressing on first listen but, when you actually listen to the words, he's making fun of death, food and relationship, which he says are the mainstays of every life (he has a fixation with lobsters too!). I saw him live once in Cincinnati (met him backstage too, as I was hosting the concert), and loved his performance as, not only does he play guitar and sing, but he also narrates funny stories connected to all his songs. Hitchcock is also known as a somewhat actor and a writer, as he writes and illustrates short stories. I have kept Robyn Hitchcock on my list of Top Five Best British Alternative Rock Singers for over twenty five years. Every album he releases, he develops his music even more and is even more fascinated with death as he himself climbs in years. Look for him on film recently in last year's release, Rachel Getting Married and if you want to hear classic Robyn Hitchcock, look for 'My Wife and My Dead Wife'. Funny and smart.

Rammstein In-depth Biography

Rammstein was formed in 1993 by an assembly of factory-weary proletarians raised in East Germany. They took their name (adding an "m") from the location of a German tragedy where 80 people were hurt and killed as the result of a crash during an American Air Force flight show. The literal translation of "ram stein" is a battering ram made of stone. Word of Rammstein's horror romanticist blend of theater and music spread like wildfire. One-time Olympic swimmer Till Lindemann would sing entire songs engulfed in flame from head to toe. The band's first album, Herzeleid (Heartache), built on the grounds created by the band's live reputation. Scaling the German charts (and remaining there until the release of the second Rammstein LP some two years later), the album also introduced the band to the world outside of the Germany/Switzerland/Austria region. As Rammstein's second album, Sehnsucht (Longing), was released, the band was headlining throughout Europe to crowds of 10,000 to 30,000 people. Sehnsucht entered the German charts at number one immediately upon its release and came very close to doing the same in Austria and Switzerland. Within weeks, entries on other countries' charts had Sehnsucht rubbing elbows with the Prodigy, Radiohead, and the Rolling Stones on Billboard's cumulative Eurochart. From there the fever spread, transcending any perceived language barrier. Mutter followed in 2001, Reise, Reise in 2004, and the live collection Volkerball in 2006.

Robbie Williams In-depth Biography

Out of all the members of Take That, Robbie Williams never really seemed to fit in. Roguishly handsome where his bandmates were merely cute, Williams was tougher and sexier than the rest, which made him more distinctive. He also fought regularly with the other members and their management, primarily because he was occasionally adverse to being so heavily packaged. So it didn't come as a surprise that he was the first to leave the band, departing early in the summer of 1995 to pursue a solo career (by some accounts, he was fired from the group). Although he was the first out of the gate, it took Williams awhile to get started. For most of 1995, he attempted to boost his credibility by tagging along with Oasis, hoping that Noel Gallagher would give him a couple of songs. He never did, but all of his time with Oasis launched Williams into a world of heavy partying, drinking, and drugging. Over the course of 1996, he was only heard from in gossip columns, and every published picture indicated he had put on considerable weight. Occasionally, he was quoted as saying his new music would abandon lightweight dance-pop for traditional Brit-pop, but his first single was a cover of George Michael's "Freedom '90." Released late in 1996, the single was a disaster, but his second single, 1997's "Old Before I Die," was more in the vein of his early pronouncements, featuring a distinct Oasis influence.

Williams finally released his first solo album, Life Thru a Lens, in 1997. The album became a big hit in Britain, prompting his second, I've Been Expecting You, in 1998. (The Ego Has Landed, a U.S.-only compilation designed for breaking Williams to American audiences, was released stateside in the spring of 1999.) Sing When You're Winning followed in late 2000, gaining success with the video hit "Rock DJ," while a big-band album of standards (Swing When You're Winning) appeared a year later. During 2002, Williams celebrated an enormous new contract with EMI (rumored to be upwards of $80 million dollars), but suffered the loss of his longtime production partner, Guy Chambers. Escapology, the fifth Robbie Williams album (and the last including Chambers' input), sold millions of copies in Europe, though it failed to persuade American audiences. As a result, the 2003 concert record Live at Knebworth wasn't released in the States. He introduced a new musical partner, Stephen Duffy, with a pair of songs from his compilation Greatest Hits, then reappeared in 2005 with Intensive Care. Although the album topped charts in Europe and Williams set an impressive concert record -- his 2006 world tour sold over 1.5 million tickets in one day -- a certain creative atrophy was setting in, despite the new input of Duffy. Within a year, he had recorded and released Rudebox, a dance album recorded with half a dozen outside producers, some featured guests, and several covers instead of self-penned material. Rudebox hit number one across Europe soon after release.

Red Hot Chili Peppers In-depth Biography

Few rock groups of the '80s broke down as many musical barriers and were as original as the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Creating an intoxicating new musical style by combining funk and punk rock together (with an explosive stage show, to boot), the Chili Peppers spawned a slew of imitators in their wake, but still managed to be the leaders of the pack by the dawn of the 21st century. The roots of the band lay in a friendship forged by three school chums, Anthony Kiedis, Michael Balzary, and Hillel Slovak, while they attended Fairfax High School in California back in the late '70s/early '80s. While Balzary and Slovak showed great musical promise (on trumpet and guitar, respectively), Kiedis focused on poetry and acting during his high school career. During this time, Slovak taught Balzary how to play bass, while the duo encouraged Kiedis to start putting his poetry to music, which he soon did. Influenced heavily by the burgeoning L.A. punk scene (the Germs, Black Flag, Fear, Minutemen, X, etc.) as well as funk (Parliament-Funkadelic, Sly & the Family Stone, etc.), the trio began to rehearse with another friend, drummer Jack Irons, leading to the formation of Tony Flow & the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem, a group that played strip bars along the sunset strip during the early '80s. It was during this time that the quartet honed their sound and live act (as they stumbled across a stage gimmick that would soon become their trademark -- performing on-stage completely naked, except for a tube sock covering a certain part of their anatomy). By 1983, Balzary had begun to go by the name "Flea," and the group changed their name to the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Word spread quickly about the up-and-coming band, resulting in a recording contract with EMI. But before the Chili Peppers could begin work on their debut, Flea and Kiedis were dealt a disappointing blow when both Slovak and Irons announced that they were leaving to focus more on another band they were in, What Is This. With replacement members Jack Sherman (guitar) and Cliff Martinez (drums) filling in, the Peppers released their self-titled debut in 1984. But the absence of the two original members showed, as the album failed to capture the excitement of their live show. While the album didn't set the world on fire sales-wise, the group began to build a dedicated underground following with college radio buffs. By 1985, What Is This was kaput (after issuing a single self-titled album), as Slovak and Irons returned back to the Peppers, resulting in the George Clinton-produced Freaky Styley. While the album was an improvement over its predecessor, it still lacked the fire of the band's in-concert experience, a problem that would finally be solved with their next album, 1987's The Uplift Mofo Party Plan. The album was the group's first to make an impression on the charts, and they followed it up a year later with stopgap five-track release, The Abbey Road EP, in 1988. But just as the world was warming up to the Peppers, tragedy struck when Slovak died from a heroin overdose on June 25, 1988.

In the wake of Slovak's death, Irons left the group for the second and final time, while Kiedis (who was also battling drug addiction at the time) and Flea decided to soldier on. After a new lineup consisting of former Parliament guitarist Blackbyrd McKnight and former Dead Kennedys drummer D.H. Peligro didn't work out, the duo found worthy replacements in newcomers John Frusciante and Chad Smith. The new-look Chili Peppers hit pay dirt straight away, as their first album together, 1989's Mother's Milk, became a surprise hit due to MTV's exposure of their videos for a cover of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground" and a song about their fallen friend Slovak, "Knock Me Down," as the album was certified gold by early 1990. The group knew that their next release would be the most important one of their career, so they moved into a mansion-turned-recording studio with producer Rick Rubin to work on what would become their most successful release yet, the stripped-down Blood Sugar Sex Magik (their first for the Warner Bros. label). The album became a monster hit upon its September 1991 release (going on to eventually sell a staggering seven million copies in the U.S. alone), as it spawned such hits as "Give It Away" and the group's first Top Ten single, "Under the Bridge."

But not all was well in the Chili Peppers camp. Like his predecessor, Frusciante had become addicted to hard drugs, and abruptly left the band mid-tour in early 1992. Undeterred, the band enlisted new member Arik Marshall, and headlined Lollapalooza II in the summer. When the band returned to the studio to work on their sixth release overall, it quickly became apparent that Marshall didn't fit in, and was replaced by Jesse Tobias. But before Tobias could record a note with the group, he was handed his walking papers as well, and former Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro signed on. After a layoff of four years, the Peppers' much-delayed follow-up to BSSM was released in 1995, One Hot Minute. While the album was a sizeable hit, it failed to match the success and musical focus of its predecessor, as it became apparent during the album's ensuing tour that Navarro wasn't fitting in as well as originally hoped, and left the band in early 1998.

After Frusciante had left the group, he released a pair of obscure solo releases, 1995's Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt and 1997's Smile from the Streets You Hold, yet rumors circulated that the guitarist was homeless, penniless, and sickly with a death-defying drug habit. After checking himself into rehab and putting his demons behind him, Frusciante emerged once again refocused and re-energized, and promptly accepted an invitation to rejoin the Peppers once more. The group's reunion album, 1999's Californication, proved to be another monster success, reconfirming the Chili Peppers as one of alternative rock's top bands. The band put in a quick guest appearance on Fishbone's Psychotic Friends Nuttwerx before hitting the road to support the album. The following months found the band getting involved in bizarre situations and controversies. First, their refusal to play songs from One Hot Minute during the tour was an unpopular decision with some fans and a sore spot for Dave Navarro. Next, they reignited a personal feud between Kiedis and Mr. Bungle singer Mike Patton by refusing to play a series of European concerts with Bungle. Patton responded with a "tribute" show for the Peppers, where Bungle mocked their stage moves, faked shooting up heroin, and imitated Kiedis' comments about Patton. They also played the ill-fated Woodstock '99 festival, where their headlining performance was met with piles of burning rubble and a full-scale riot. Tours with the Foo Fighters and Pearl Jam brought them into the next year without problems, but they stepped off the road after a planned stop in Israel was halted due to security worries. They returned to the studio in November of 2001 and by the summer of 2002 they had a new album ready to drop, By the Way. Warner Brothers released a Greatest Hits compilation in 2003, followed by a chart-topping two-CD album of all-new material, Stadium Arcadium, in 2006.

Metallica In-depth Biography

Metallica was easily the best, most influential heavy metal band of the '80s, responsible for bringing the music back to Earth. Instead of playing the usual rock star games of metal stars of the early '80s, the band looked and talked like they were from the street. Metallica expanded the limits of thrash, using speed and volume not for their own sake, but to enhance their intricately structured compositions. The release of 1983's Kill 'Em All marked the beginning of the legitimization of heavy metal's underground, bringing new complexity and depth to thrash metal. With each album, the band's playing and writing improved; James Hetfield developed a signature rhythm playing that matched his growl, while lead guitarist Kirk Hammett became one of the most copied guitarists in metal. Lars Ulrich's thunderous, yet complex, drumming clicked in perfectly with Cliff Burton's innovative bass playing. After releasing their masterpiece Master of Puppets in 1986, tragedy struck the band when their tour bus crashed while traveling in Sweden, killing Burton. When the band decided to continue, Jason Newsted was chosen to replace Burton; two years later, the band released the conceptually ambitious ...And Justice for All, which hit the Top Ten without any radio play and very little support from MTV. But Metallica completely crossed over into the mainstream with 1991's Metallica, which found the band trading in their long compositions for more concise song structures; it resulted in a number one album that sold over seven million copies in the U.S. alone. The band launched a long, long tour which kept them on the road for nearly two years. By the '90s, Metallica had changed the rules for all heavy metal bands; they were the leaders of the genre, respected not only by headbangers, but by mainstream record buyers and critics. No other heavy metal band has ever been able to pull off such a trick. However, the group lost some members of their core audience with their long-awaited follow-up to Metallica, 1996's Load. For Load, the band decided to move toward alternative rock in terms of image -- they cut their hair and had their picture taken by Anton Corbijn. Although the album was a hit upon its summer release -- entering the charts at number one and selling three million copies within two months -- certain members of their audience complained about the shift in image, as well as the group's decision to headline the sixth Lollapalooza. Re-Load, which combined new material with songs left off of the Load record, appeared in 1997; despite poor reviews, it sold at a typically brisk pace through the next year. Garage Inc., a double-disc collection of B-sides, rarities, and newly recorded covers, followed in 1998. In 1999, Metallica continued their flood of product with S&M, documenting a live concert with the San Francisco Symphony; it debuted at number two, reconfirming their immense popularity.

The band spent most of 2000 embroiled in controversy by spearheading a legal assault on Napster, a file-sharing service that allowed users to download music files from each other's computers. Aggressively targeting copyright infringement of their own material, the band notoriously had over 300,000 users kicked off the service, creating a widespread debate over the availability of digital music that raged for most of the year. In January 2001, bassist Jason Newsted announced his amicable departure from the band. Shortly after the band appeared at the ESPN awards in April of the same year, Hetfield, Hammett, and Ulrich entered the recording studio to begin work on their next album, with producer Bob Rock lined up to handle bass duties for the sessions (with rumors of former Ozzy Osbourne/Alice in Chains bassist Mike Inez being considered for the vacated position). In July, Metallica surprisingly dropped their lawsuit against Napster, perhaps sensing that their controversial stance did more bad than good to their "band of the people" image. In late summer 2001, the band's recording sessions (and all other band-related matters) were put on hold as Hetfield entered an undisclosed rehab facility for alcoholism and other addictions. He completed treatment and rejoined the band and they headed back into the studio in 2002 to record St. Anger, released in mid-2003. The recording of St. Anger was capped with the search for a permanent replacement for Newstead. After a long audition process, former Ozzy Osbourne/Suicidal Tendencies bass player Robert Trujillo was selected and joined Metallica for their 2003/2004 world tour. The growing pains the band experienced during the recording process of St. Anger were captured in the celebrated documentary Some Kind of Monster which saw theatrical release in 2004. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine & Greg Prato

Crisis In Hollywood Interview

crsis
Can you please introduce yourself and your role in Crisis In Hollywood?
I’m Adrian, I sing and play guitar for Crisis in Hollywood.
Your album Safe and Sound came out on May 12. Overall, how do you feel about this album? What has been the fan reaction to the release?
This album has been a life changing experience for all of us. From the ground up it was something new. With the opportunity it presented, there was a bit of a timecrunch on the writing, but regardless, I think we’re all really happy with the reaction we’ve been getting. While many of our fans still love our first album, Safe and Sound opened a few doors creatively for us and so far, everyone is digging it.

How do you think your new album Safe And Sound is different from your previous work?
You could say we’ve grown since the first album. I think that Safe and Sound is far from perfect, and I could pick it apart for days, but we started to understand more of who we were on this album and what we wanted to create. I think our best album will always be whatever is next, but when I watch people listen to the new one, I feel like we’re heading in the right direction.
What song(s) are you most proud of and why?
Really, I’m proud of the album as a whole. The writing process became a frenzy when we found out we would be recording sooner than planned, and we had a total of 18 songs to choose from by the deadline. For me, knowing the metamorphoses of a some tracks is incredible. I still hang on to early demos of songs like “Don’t Overact” which was an up tempo punk song before we decided to pull a 180 and tone it down to get a new vibe for the album.
How was working with Bayside’s Anthony Raneri on this album?
Anthony is a great guy and when the opportunity came to work with him, we jumped at it. We were together for 5 weeks in the studio working on this album and he came in with a lot of focus and great advice that we’ve kept with us. It’s always good to have a mentor become a friend, and creating something with a man we’ve respected for years was a dream come true.
What are your touring plans for the remainder of the year?
Touring is the number one priority. We’re just finishing up our “Survive the Swine ‘09″ tour with Hand to Hand up the east coast, and we’re plotting out a west coast tour with those guys again very soon. We live to tour. Sleeping in our van is something that’s not for everyone, but it’s right for us.
How did Crisis in Hollywood come together as a band?
Before CiH, we were all friends. In fact, we’ve all played together in separate bands throught the years. Just before this band got together, Andy and I had formed From Adam to Atom, and midway through we picked up Logan. After a few problems with the line up, we threw our hats in and decided to build something we loved from scratch. We recruited Daniel, who we already knew would be a perfect fit, and set up our first show on Super Bowl Sunday in 2007
Do you have any interesting and/or funny stories from the road/recording/life?
We had a night off in NC, and instead of wasting it with sleep recovery, we decided to hit an open mic. The problem was the only one available was a small country bar. Not exactly our style. We showed up anyway and were welcomed with open arms to the crowd composed of men and women 30 years our senior. We set up after an amazing jam band and ripped through a few of our songs. Surprisingly, the crowd loved us andhelped us pay our way to the next city. But before we left it was time to party. Unfortunately, the best parts of the night are probably things I can’t talk about, but use some imagination and you’re probably right. They were a people set in their ways, andwho were we to turn down any offers? All I can really say is that we will absolutely be returning. As soon as possible.
What goals do you have for Crisis in Hollywood for the future?
Like I said, touring is number one for us right now, although we have been writing our asses off and we’ve got some exciting songs on the horizon. But as for now, we hope to see everyone across the United States.

How did you guys get started playing music?
We’ve all been playing for years. I can’t say how everyone started up, but personally, about 10 years ago, my father surprised me with a guitar one day and the dream was born. He taught me my first chords and after he died a few years later, I found myself with a purpose and more drive to do what I love than ever before.
Any last words for our readers?
In the words of our newest 62 year old friend Harry, “Boogety, boogety.”
